In December 9, 1942, a B-24 Liberator bomber crash landed in bad weather on Atka Island, injuring one crew member. The wreckage is preserved at this site on an island chain where American and Japanese forces battled during World War II. The monument also interprets the removal and internment of the native Unangan people.
