This Smithsonian building was constructed to house exhibits from the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, a world’s fair that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the nation’s founding. Through the years, the country’s first national museum, a National Mall landmark, introduced Americans to many innovations, including Thomas Edison’s light bulb and space travel.
