Opened in Queens in 1948 as New York International Airport, it was known to locals as Idlewild Airport because of the golf course torn down to make way for it. A renaming honored the 35th President following his assassination in 1963. While it is one of three airports servicing the NYC metro area, it is one of the nation’s busiest domestic and international hubs.
