The smallest Great Lake by volume is also the shallowest, with an average depth of 62 feet. Its warm waters make Erie the most biologically diverse and most productive of the five. Home to 50% of all fish in the Great Lakes, the lake supports one of the largest commercial freshwater fisheries in the world and a booming “Vacationland” for tourists on its northern Ohio shores and islands.
