The Legislative Building of the 42nd state commemorates this designation with 42 granite steps to its North entrance and boasts a 287-foot-tall self-supporting masonry dome. The forested hilltop campus grounds are designed in a City Beautiful style, featuring six buildings, a rich collection of memorials and artwork, and several parks. It earned its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
