Few buildings are as ingrained into the American psyche as this theater where famed actor John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln five days after General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate army in 1865. Live performances and museum exhibits celebrate the legacy of the 16th president. Also preserved at this site is the Peterson House, where Lincoln died the next morning.
