He never visited Washington during his lifetime, but Briton James Smithson played a huge role in shaping the capital city. He bequeathed his fortune and his name to the creation of the Smithsonian Institution. The red sandstone Castle completed in 1855 is the organization’s administrative headquarters and home to a modern visitor center and the reinterred Smithson’s crypt.
