Atop the 180-foot-high rotunda, in the eye of the inner dome, a painting depicting George Washington’s ascension to heaven looks down on eight large paintings, a frescoed frieze, and numerous statues and busts. The outer cast iron dome rises 287 feet and looms over two wings serving the House and Senate. Construction began in 1793 and endured being set afire by the British during the War of 1812.
