In 1874, Congress passed an act making Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. the first landscape architect of the United States Capitol. Olmsted’s vision for the 58-acre Grounds is one of his greatest accomplishments. His careful placement of trees, shrubs, and walkways offer attractive views of the U.S. Capitol but do not distract the viewer from the building.
