Completed under the direction of Charles Bulfinch in 1824, this neoclassical domed heart of the U.S. Capitol connects the House and Senate chambers. Brumidi’s Apotheosis of Washington fresco adorns the Rotunda’s eye 180 feet above the floor where thousands of daily visitors stand and behold the room’s ambitious architecture, sculptures and paintings.
