The unforgettable appearance of the park’s largest hot spring has challenged efforts to describe it since its naming in 1871. Vivid colors radiate from the bluish center as the hot water rises to the surface, flows outward and cools. The hues are created by the different bacteria that survive in the changing water temperatures.
