Named in 1851 by a member of a California militia unit that attacked Native American villages in the Yosemite Valley, this more than 3,000-foot-tall granite monolith is one of the most recognizable and often-photographed geologic formations on Earth. Rock climbers from around the world ascend routes on ”El Cap’s” vertical walls.
