A bustling river port grew along the Ohio River due to the advent of the steamboat and arrival of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Founded in 1788, this commercial center was named for King Louis XVI of France, but today is more fondly associated with “Sluggers”. Birthplace of Muhammad Ali, it is the leading producer of bonded bourbon whiskey and home to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
