In 1790, Samuel Slater constructed the country's first water-powered cotton-spinning mill along the Blackstone River in Pawtucket. Fellow industrialists followed his lead, building texture mills and mill villages along the 48-mile-long river. Visitors can explore Old Slater Mill by land and paddle along the river from Worcester to Providence.
