This groundbreaking zoo opened during the Great Depression, pioneering open-view habitats by replacing traditional cages with naturalistic enclosures and water- filled moats. Its 1930s modernist architecture, partially crafted from local limestone, remains a defining feature of the grounds. It houses more than 3,400 animals across 511 species, making it one of the largest zoos in the Midwest.
