At its peak around AD 1100, this Mississippian metropolis housed up to 20,000 people who built 120 earthen mounds, including 100-foot Monks Mound. Shark teeth, shells, and copper objects reveal far-reaching exchange. Defensive walls, a ceremonial plaza, and a timber solar calendar testify to one of ancient North America's greatest cities.
