Established by Chinese fishermen in the 1850s, this district packed millions of sardines and became central to Monterey Bay’s fishing boom. Steinbeck immortalized its laborers in his 1945 novel, even prompting Ocean View Avenue’s renaming. Today, former canneries hold shops, restaurants, and a thriving aquarium, cementing Cannery Row as the Bay’s best-known waterfront attraction.
