Constructed in 1863 by Union troops, this fort protected the Orange and Alexandria Railroad from raids by Confederate troops. Post-war farming of the land erased much of the original fort structure, but part of the original earthworks remains. Archaeological studies revealed a Native American presence here, indicating this site was likely used as a seasonal camp before the arrival of the first Europeans.
