Between the Appalachian ridges and the Cumberland Plateau, this was once a rail-and-foundry hub. It was founded in 1816 as a Cherokee trading post called Ross’s Landing. Civil War history still rings the ridges, preserving the campaigns over rail and river crossings. Now known as the “Scenic City,” it is a mountain gateway to hiking, rock climbing, and river sports without leaving city limits.
