A resort island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is famous for clam shoals and oyster beds, waterfront parks, and saltwater fishing. Speculated to be the result of a forgotten shipwreck, wild ponies have lived in bands on Assateague Island for centuries. To maintain the herd’s size, every summer Saltwater Cowboys swim the ponies across the channel to Chincoteague Island for a carnival and auction.
