Caught in an imperial battle, a fort on St. Simons Island helped the British repel Spanish advances and retain the colony of Georgia. General James Edward Oglethorpe founded Fort Frederica in 1736 but once the powers achieved peace the Garrison disbanded. Excavations later uncovered ruins of the fort, military barracks, and homes.
