Established in the 1850s, Fort Lancaster protected travelers on the San Antonio–El Paso Road. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of over 30 buildings, including a blacksmith shop, hospital, sutler's store, and bakery. The site is a State Antiquities Landmark and listed in
the National Register of Historic Places.
