An avid amateur historian and advocate for a more open government, America’s 32nd President laid the groundwork for the first presidential library. In 1934, Roosevelt created the National Archives to serve as the steward for a library to preserve and provide public access to documents, photos, memorabilia and recordings from his life and Presidency.
