More than 96 percent of this South American territory is covered by Amazon rainforest. Its Guiana Space Centre has launched European rockets since 1968 from a near- equatorial site ideal for reaching orbit. Miles offshore, the Salvation Islands preserve France’s penal-colony history, including Devil’s Island. Its vast Amazonian Park protects one of the richest concentrations of tropical biodiversity.
