On the Mississippi River, a 630-foot stainless-steel arch dominates the skyline. It is symbolic of a nation stretching from Atlantic ports to Pacific horizons. Designed by Eero Saarinen as the Jefferson Expansion Memorial, it salutes St. Louis as a launch point for Lewis and Clark’s journey. In 1846, Dred and Harriet Scott even sued for freedom here on the grounds now called the “Gateway to the West.”
