Spanning roughly 500,000 square miles, this was once part of the Silk Road linking China and Mongolia. This cold desert is more rock and hardpan than sand. With winters that can plunge far below 0°F, Bactrian camels, snow leopards, and Saiga still thrive in the harsh environment. This is also a renowned fossil region, with the world’s first non-avian dinosaur eggs discovered here in the 1920s.
