This city near Denver in a scenic valley at the foot of the Rocky Mountains served as territorial capital from 1862 to 1867. Golden is a vibrant college town and recreational destination. Downtown teems with diners and shoppers, who also visit museums, local events and one of the world’s largest breweries. Tubing and kayaking through town on Clear Creek whitewater are enormously popular.
