The Potomac River winds through McLean, Virginia surging over the steep rocks of Great Falls and the narrow passage of Mather Gorge. Strong rapids and heavy currents prohibit swimming but are a major draw for whitewater kayakers. Among the park’s 800 acres, 15 miles of hiking trails traverse three falls overlooks, woodland areas and popular top-rope climbing routes of varying difficulty along the cliffs.
