Framed by Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, this 159-square-mile harbor is Brazil’s second-largest bay. Portuguese sailors entered in 1502, mistook its broad mouth for a river, and helped give Rio de Janeiro its name. More than 130 islands, remnant mangroves, seabirds, and Guiana dolphins keep its urban waters tied to a living coastal ecosystem. Its name is Tupi-Guarani for “bosom of the sea.”
