Salt and freshwater marshes, maritime forest, dunes, and open beaches along the 160-mile seashore on the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico shelter nearly 300 species of birds as part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Historic sites in Mississippi, Florida, and the barrier islands include the Naval Live Oaks Reservation and three forts built to protect Pensacola Harbor in the Revolutionary War.
