Haleakalā, “house of the sun,” is where, as legend has it, the demigod Maui slowed the passage of the sun to lengthen the work day. The sunrises and sunsets best viewed from the visitor center near the summit of the dormant 10,023-foot volcano are world famous. Hikers explore the Crater depression and take forested trails to the many waterfalls in the coastal Kīpahulu District.
