On May 31 each year, 2,209 luminarias are lit in memory of each life lost on that date in 1889 when the South Fork Dam failed and millions of gallons of water surged into the industrial city. This memorial northeast of town is home to dam remnants and portions of the former Lake Conemaugh bed. Historic buildings also are preserved.
