As some of the first fish farmers in recorded history, Native Hawaiians cultivated fish in brackish, nutrient-rich nearshore lagoons enclosed with rock walls. Slatted gates in the walls allowed young, small fish to enter the calm lagoon and feed on algae. This, and supplemental feeding by people, made them too large to escape again.
