At the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers, three Hidatsa groups established and lived in these earthlodge villages 500 years before European contact. The area served as an important agricultural and trading center for Plains Indians. Sakakawea, who was integral to the survival of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and her young son lived here.
