Sudden and gradual changes over millions of years created three distinct geologic provinces in Eastern Washington. Within this Area, indigenous peoples, settlers, and traders used the Columbia River for fishing and trading for 9,000 years. The 1930’s construction of Grand Coulee Dam created a lake with 600 miles of rich and dynamic shoreline.
