Chartered in 1873, this independent city west of Washington D.C. grew from a rail junction where two 1850s-era lines met. Nearby fields saw the Civil War’s first major battle spark to life on July 21, 1861, followed by a larger clash in August of 1862.  The historic railway depot, rebuilt in 1914 after a fire, was restored in 1997. It proudly remains an anchor of the celebrated downtown area.
