This site on the National Mall is the first Washington, DC, memorial to honor an African American individual. Visitors are invited to reflect on MLK’s civil rights legacy while walking through the 450-foot-long “Mountain of Despair,” inscribed with quotes from his career. Carved from the “Stone of Hope,” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stands 30 feet tall, a beacon of kindness and tolerance for all.
