website.
This remote refuge began in 1954 from a land donation by aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin. It now proudly spans 4,548 acres across northern Smith Island and Watts Island. Its tidal marshes and ridges support nesting osprey, while brown pelicans maintain one of the Maryland Chesapeake’s most significant colonies. It protects key habitat in one of the bay’s richest waterfowl feeding areas.
