The eighth U.S. president was born during the last months of the American Revolution and died early in the Civil War years. Van Buren returned to Lindenwald, his hometown estate, in 1841 after his failed reelection effort. The grounds and the mansion, which hosts seasonal guided tours, are preserved at this scenic site.
