On July 9, 1864, one of the Civil War’s lesser-known but truly consequential battles took place at this scenic site along the Monocacy River. Technically, it was a Confederate victory, but the Union soldiers bought time for the reinforcement of Washington, DC, and Southern hopes of taking the capital were dashed. Self-guided auto tours and a walking trail begin at the visitor center.
