In 1836, formerly enslaved man “Free Frank” McWorter, able to work and purchase freedom for himself, wife Lucy and later, several other family members, founded the nation’s first community legally established by an African American. The multi-racial town has mostly disappeared, its story now kept alive through on-site interpretation.
