This fanciful summer cottage was commissioned in 1839 by a Southern plantation owner. It helped spark Newport’s 19th-century “cottage boom,” establishing Gothic Revival as a defining architectural style. This ornate cottage is one of Newport’s earliest and most imaginative architectural statements from the pre-Civil War era.
