This National Historic Landmark in the center of Capitol Square is designed in the shape of a cross with wings meeting in a central rotunda topped by a copper dome nearly 100 feet tall. Completed in 1840, the Capitol narrowly avoided destruction just 25 years later as the city surrendered to Union forces. Executive branch offices are still located within the three-story granite building.
