A Michoacán farmer saw a crack open in his field in 1943, beginning one of modern volcanology’s best documented eruptions. The cinder cone grew from birth to dormancy in just nine years, building a 1,391-foot cone that produced ash and lava that buried two towns. Quiet since 1952, it remains a landmark of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and is often called the youngest volcano in the Americas.
