Before Union forces could capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, nearby Petersburg had to be taken. The Civil War struggle devolved into a bloody siege that lasted more than nine months before Northern forces prevailed in April of 1865. A 33-mile road tour connects battlefields, a national cemetery and three visitor centers.
