East of Chattanooga is sacred ground that once served as the last seat of the Cherokee national government. Settled here between 1832 and their forced departure in 1838, the Cherokee Nation lived among narrow valleys, forested ridges, and the natural Blue Hole Spring. As a certified site along the Trail of Tears, an Eternal Flame and interpretive center depict and memorialize the tribe’s tragic history.
