This landmark in Amboy’s stark desert emptiness began as a gas station in 1938, then expanded into a café, motel, and auto-repair stop for Mojave-bound travelers. Its 50-foot, boomerang-shaped neon sign became one of the most recognizable beacons on California’s stretch of Route 66. Today, Roy’s iconic gas station and gift shop still anchor what has otherwise become nearly a ghost town.
