This is the world’s smallest inhabited island shared by two nations. It has upheld an open French-Dutch border since the 1648 Treaty of Concordia divided its 34 square miles. Marigot, the French-side capital, grew around a bay where its famous Fort Louis was built in 1789. Together, its French Caribbean culture and colonial landmarks give this half of the island a character distinctly its own.
