Stephen F. Austin founded the headquarters of his colony here in 1823. During the Texas Revolution, residents burned it as they evacuated during the Runaway Scrape in 1836. Today, visitors walk grounds that were once the social, economic, and political center of American immigration to Texas and reflect on early Texas settlers’ lives and sacrifices.
