Often described as North America’s first and largest Chinese neighborhood, this district grew from 1850s Gold Rush arrivals. It is the most densely populated – about 15,000 residents in just 24 square blocks – and is the largest Chinese enclave outside Asia. After the devastating fire in 1906, it was rebuilt into an “Oriental City”. Today, it is a community of family associations, authentic shops, and dim sum halls.
